Police target mini-motorbikes after flood of complaints

RESIDENTS on a housing estate in Mildenhall have raised concerns over the increasing problem of youths on mini motorbikes.

At a meeting of the Mildenhall Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) on Friday, several residents from the St John's Close estate raised the

issue with officers following a rise in the number of youths riding on

pathways and in the neighbouring woodland area.

According to police, the problem is at its worst during the evenings

and at weekends.

Sgt Phil Payne, of Mildenhall SNT, said: "Essentially, the problem is

these youngsters are riding around in an area which is not suitable for

them.

"The other issue is that many of these bikes have no number plates

and their owners are riding them with no crash helmets."

The biggest concern among residents is that it will be only a matter

of time before a serious accident occurs between one of the riders and a

pedestrian, unless action is taken.

Graham Bosward, of St John's Close, said: "There is at least three

mini motorbikes and one off-road bike involved. What they do is roar

through here on the footpaths from Selwyn Close to get to either Downing

Close or Pembrooke Close.

"With a school so close by, one of these days they will end up knocking

over a child or an elderly person.

Nine times out of 10 it won't be them who will be hurt but the child

or elderly person. The problem has been going on for a while but it has

definitely been getting worse over the last few weeks."

Neighbour Vicky Cifci added: "They ride around here on the pavements

without any number plates.

"What I am concerned about is my daughter getting knocked over by one of them."

In a bid to clamp down on the problem, Sgt Payne has outlined several

possible options the police will be taking with the problem riders.

"We have only just taken the issue on as a priority. What we'll be doing

is working with Forest Heath Council and the Forestry Commission to try

to see if there is a suitable area for these riders to use the bikes.

"We will also try and educate those involved in the dangers of using

the bikes in a built up area.

"What we must ensure is that they comply with the law."
