Police probe spate of car vandalism in Newmarket

A stone smashed the car window of a woman driving through a Newmarket street and several parked cars were damaged during a spate of car vandalism in the town.

The woman was driving in Exning Road at a junction with George Lambton Avenue towards the town centre at 11.05pm on Saturday, February 16, when a stone was thrown at her Renault Megane, hitting the roof and causing one of the side windows to smash.

On the same night, police received reports of damage to 16 cars parked in Freshfields, which had each had the paintwork scratched at different times throughout the evening.

And on Sunday a further five incidents were reported to police by residents whose cars parked in George Lambton Avenue had been targeted. Four had had the paintwork scratched and one had been vandalised with spray-paint.

A resident contacted the Journal about similar vandalism of cars parked in Jim Joel Court and Heasman Close, but a Suffolk Police spokeswoman said no incidents had been reported to them.

The spokeswoman added: “We would encourage anyone who may have suffered similar incidents, or anyone with information about suspicious activity in the area at the time, to report it to police immediately.”

Call Suffolk Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
