Plans for new town rec at stud

Plans to turn more than 26 acres of stud paddocks into a new recreation ground for the town and a new home for Newmarket Town Football Club will be discussed by councillors next month.

It is the third recent planning application to come from town mayor Cllr George Lambton.

The latest plan follows his proposals for a Sainsbury’s supermarket, cinema, petrol station, drive-through restaurant and 90 new homes on the Lambton playing fields in Newmarket’s Fordham Road, and for new sports facilities including pitches and changing facilities on Newmarket College’s playing field.

The proposal for the 26.6 acres of paddocks at Brickfields Stud in Exning Road is for four full-size pitches, car parking for more than 100 cars, together with changing rooms, a treatment room and toilets, replacing the facilities that would be lost should the supermarket plan be approved.

Just over seven acres of land would also be available for public recreational use.

A report, submitted with the planning application, said the site was large enough to accommodate Newmarket Town Football Club, which had been in talks with Cllr Lambton’s planning advisers, and wanted to relocate from its current base at the Town Ground in Cricket Field Road.

The club would also take on the responsibility of managing the site and the community pitches.

If the principle of using the stud paddocks for recreation was accepted it was likely that the football club would make its own planning application for the site at a later date.

Cllr Lambton said he did not want to comment on the proposal ahead of a presentation he intends to give to members of Newmarket Town Council’s planning committee on Monday, March 4.

However, the planning report stated the reason for the plan was to overcome Sport England’s objection to the Sainsbury’s plan based on the loss of playing fields and public open space.
