PICTURE SPECIAL: Thousands enjoy Burwell Carnival
THOUSANDS of people gathered in Burwell at the weekend for the village's annual carnival.
The increasingly popular annual event, which takes place on the last weekend of June, raises money for a string of local community projects and a show of more than 3,000 people came to watch.
Organisers hope that this year's carnival will have made more than 10,000.
Kicking off the show was the parade of 14 floats, led by the carnival king, Alex Chan and queen, Alice Verney, with attendants Ben Criddle and Kayleigh Taylor in a pink Hummer sports limousine.
Leaving Margaret's Field, the parade travelled to Bunting's Path, near Burwell Village College Primary School.
There were also prizes for the floats, with this year's parade being movie-themed.
First place went to 1st Burwell Cubs, with their Hook and Peter Pan theme, Burwell Guides were in second place with Alice in Wonderland and Burwell Early Learners (BEL) in third, who dressed up as Finding Nemo characters, in third.
"It was a great day and everything went well," said Peter Lancaster, from Burwell Carnival committee.
"This event was organised by people from the village, for the village.
"Every organisation involved gets a donation, depending on the input."
Following the carnival, there was also live music from a string of local bands, including popular rockers Macca.
A charity auction of lots, featuring a flying day at Marshalls, Cambridge, and a VIP day at Newmarket races raised 800.
The carnival committee is appealing for helpers for next year's event.
