Sales of seeds of a poppy named after the highest military award given for gallantry, have raised £24,000 for a world famous home for veterans.

The donation to the Royal Hospital Chelsea has been made by Kentford firm, Mr Fothergill’s , which raised the money from sales of seeds of the Victoria Cross variety of poppy, its biggest single seller. David Carey, the firms’s joint managing director who is pictured centre, making the presentation to Chelsea pensioners, Barbara Whilds and William ‘Paddy’ Fox, said this year’s centenary of the start of the First World War “brought into focus the debt we continue to owe to those who defend us.”
