Residents in Exning will gain two acres of park land from developers planning to build 120 new homes on the edge of the village.
Forest Heath District Council approved the application, put forward by developer Charles Church for land south of Burwell Road, at a meeting in March 2013, despite around 80 villagers turning up to protest.
But now, subject to permissions being granted, the village will gain 8,800sq m of park land adjacent to the development - 2,200sq m more than the maximum obligation of 6,000sq m.
Cllr Simon Cole, who represents Exning for the district council and formed the Keep Exning Small action group to oppose the development, said: “I have been talking to the developers since last year.
“I felt that Exning would benefit more from a park than from money that might never get spent. They agreed, and now Exning will get two acres of park land so I’m very pleased.
“It will be open for everyone to enjoy if they want to take the dog for a walk, play frisbee or just enjoy the sunshine.”
He added: “I think it will help to absorb the new development into the village so to get some park land back is fantastic.”
When the application was given the green light, the district council’s planning committee had received 315 letters of objection from residents in Exning and a 900-signature petition against the development.
Exning Parish Council also objected to the proposal.
The 14-acre development, which will be known as Chancery Park, will include one to five-bedroom homes, 36 of which would be affordable, and improvements to roads and cycle ways.
