Parents to discuss acadamy

Parents and stakeholders are being invited to give their views on plans which would see Mildenhall College turn into an academy.

Last week the college saw its academy conversion order receive the go-ahead from the Department of Education, four months after it was initially submitted.

Under the plans it will see the college work in partnership with Birmingham-based sponsor Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) to deliver the proposal.

In order for parents and interested parents to have their say, officials at the college will hold a meeting at their Bury Road site at 6pm on Tuesday, April 16, as part of a six-week consultation process.

“For the last couple of years we had been thinking about converting to an academy on our own, but then we decided to go in with an experienced academy trust who share a similar vision to us,” said Susan Byles, headteacher.

“We think this is a very positive move for the college. By changing to an academy it will give greater provision at sixth form level and it will help support and develop lower school years as well.”

By becoming an academy it would see the college run independent from the local education authority along with receiving funding directly from the Government.

“Leaving the local education authority will allow us more freedom to create our own policies and direct the curriculum in the direction best suited to our community which we hope will help move the school forward,” added Ms Byles.

“While by receiving money directly from the government it will mean none is kept back by the local education authority, meaning that we can look to use service providers that offer the best value for money.”

Subject to the consultation process the transfer of the college to an academy will take effect from July.

For anyone who cannot attend the meeting but would like to air their views, email e.thomas@academytransformation.co.uk.
