A village’s all-weather games area has been saved after it was revealed it is to get a major facelift as part of the Olympic legacy.

Stetchworth Parish Council will receive £34,800 from Sport England towards the £55,000 cost of the refurbishment of the Ellesmere Centre facility. The remainder will come from a fund set up 18 years ago when the centre was first built.

The refurbishment, which should start next month, will include the replacement of the centre’s all-weather surface, with new court markings and recessed goal areas as well as improvements to lighting, fencing and storage.

Both the parish council and the management of the Ellesmere Centre have welcomed the award without which it may have been impossible to have kept the facility in use, losing a well-used sport’s facility in this rural locality.

South East Cambridgeshire MP Sir Jim Paice said: “This grant is great news for local residents of Stetchworth who, despite their rural location, will still be able to be involved in football, tennis, netball and many other sporting activities right on their doorstep.”
