A village shop manned by volunteers will be celebrating a special milestone at the weekend.
Saturday will mark the 30th anniversary of the Ellesmere Centre village shop in Stetchworth.
Back in 1984 there were more than 20 volunteers who operated the shop on a half day rota system.
Over the years that number has decreased but the shop still has a rota of eight regular helpers who make sure it continues to thrive. Thirty years ago the shop was open five and a half days a week from 9am to 5pm as well as Saturday mornings. Then In 1992 when the Post Office changed hands and was located at the centre opening hours were changed to co-incide with its hours opening 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday.Brenda Bendon, one of the volunteers said: “Five of us put £300 each to buy stock and this was repaid withing two years. Postmistress Sally Mann has been an invaluable support over the last 20 years as have the volunteers who work in the shop serving the community.
Tomorrow the centre will be hosting a party to mark its milestone .
