Ninety-six new homes for Soham

CONTROVERSIAL plans for 96 new homes look set to go ahead on former allotment land in Soham.

Members of East Cambridgeshire District Council's planning committee agreed the Hopkins Homes scheme in principle, but the final decision will rest with the authority's head of planning once the developer has completed negotiations with the highways authority.

The new homes will be built in Regal Drive off Fordham Road and will include 29 affordable properties, 20 of which will be for rent.

The scheme includes a children's play area and improvements to the Fordham Road access to the site.

Soham Town Council raised no objection to the plans, but concerns were raised by residents of neighbouring properties that the new estate would increase congestion on an already busy road, creating around 70 extra vehicle movements during the morning rush hour, increasing the risk to children walking to school, and around 75 between 5pm and 6pm.

Highways officials had asked for further information on the impact the increased traffic would have on Soham High Street.
