Newmarket school children said bon voyage to the town’s vintage car club as it set off on a trip to its twinning group in a Paris suburb.

Newmarket and District Car Club took 19 enthusiasts in nine classic cars to a club in Maisons Laffitte, in the suburbs of Paris, from June 5 to 9.

The cars they took included a MK2 Jaguar saloon, Ford Corsair, Lomax, MGB GT, E-Type Jaguar, Ford Consul, Toyota Sera, MGA Roadster and Riley 2.5.

They were wished a safe journey by primary school pupils before they left from The Bull at Burrough Green on Friday morning.

The long weekend involved sightseeing, a boat trip around the backwaters of Paris, a picnic and a visit to the local fire brigades’ museum.

French car club EVAMM hosted a dinner on the final night at a country club overlooking the river Seine, where gifts were exchanged between the two clubs, and Newmarket president Bill McLean gave his thanks for the hospitality they received.

Newmarket Car Club was established through the town’s twinning association, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
