New drop in centre for 14-18's at Soham Library, Soham Action 4 Youth SA4Y, Beth Green, chairman, with Euan Ambrose, access and Outreach worker from Centre 33.

A drop-in centre for the young people of Soham has opened its doors in the town.

Funded by local charity Soham Action 4 Youth (SA4Y), the sessions in Soham library’s meeting room between 5pm and 7pm every Monday aim to provide a warm, welcoming and safe place for people aged between 14 and 18 to meet.

Two youth workers are on hand during opening hours, offering advice and counseling to anyone who needs it. But organisers hope the group can attract more youths to expand over the coming months.

SA4Y chairman Beth Green said: “There is very little provision for young people of this age bracket in Soham.

“We are hoping that this group is just a start of something and will grow and be able to take on other age groups with especially tailored activities for each set of young people.”

The charity is already supporting a new initiative called the Soham Friends Project. Run by a local mum, led by young people aged 10 to 17 and supported by parents, carers and professionals, the group is targeted at young people with additional support needs.

Sessions take place on Fridays between 3pm and 5pm at Soham’s Ross Peers Sports Centre.

SA4Y is also supporting Socrates Cafe – a self-help and philosophy group for young people which meets every Monday from 3pm to 5pm at St Andrew’s Church, Soham.

Beth said SA4Y had great plans afoot.

“We hope to provide some support for a wide range of young people between the ages of nine and 18 and are in discussions about a youth club for younger groups, which hopefully will start to take shape in time for the summer holidays.

“Soham has very little provision outside the already established after-school clubs for this age bracket but we are working hard to change that.”

Anyone interested in helping out with any of SA4Y’s projects, or for more information about them, email Beth at SA4Y@hotmail.co.uk.
