Town mayor, Cllr Geoffrey Jaggard, has officially opened a new sea cadet unit based at Newmarket College.
The unit, one of the first of its kind at a state school, is now inviting local youngsters aged 10 to 18, and potential new volunteer instructors, or unit management team members aged 18 and over, to join up.
College principal, Bob Cadwalladr, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of the first state schools to open such a unit and to be partnering with the sea cadets to make the most of the excellent facilities that we have available here at Newmarket College.
The unit is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.15pm until 9.30pm and for a weekly donation of £2, youngsters will be able to take part in activities like sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and rock climbing, as well as learning map and compass skills. Cadets will also get the chance to gain a BTEC in public Services and qualifications from the Institute of Leadership and Management and take part in weekend courses and summer camps.
