A new management agreement will see the Dome Leisure Centre continue to provide leisure facilities in Mildenhall until 2018.

Following a deal between Anglia Community Leisure (ACL) which runs the centre on behalf of Forest Heath District Council (FHDC), Suffolk County Council (SCC), and Mildenhall College Academy (MCA), the Bury Road site is to run leisure provisions for the next five years in order to allow time for plans on the Mildenhall Hub project to be further explored.

A business case to make sure that the new hub project, which aims to bring a range of public services in the town on to one site, is financially achievable will begin this year.

“I am really pleased that all the partners involved are making sure the Dome stays open as long as possible by working closely together,” said Cllr Warwick Hirst, Forest Heath Cabinet Member for Health, Leisure and Culture.

“This agreement will give a strong commitment to those who enjoy the town’s leisure facilities by providing certainty about access while we look at the best way to replace the Dome and the town’s swimming pool.”

Changes to the existing agreement between FHDC, SCC and the college, have also had to be made due to the college, which uses the site for sporting activities and as an exam centre, gaining its academy status last year.

“We are very pleased to be able to step in and help continue the provision of leisure activities at the Dome Leisure Centre which has been at the heart of the community for a number of years,” said Susan Byles, principal of MCA.

“Here at Mildenhall College Academy we are always keen to strengthen our links with the local community.”

The news of the new deal for the leisure centre, has also been welcomed by Warren Smyth, chief executive of ACL.

“For Anglia Community Leisure this is a fantastic new partnership and we are very excited to be part of the plans for the new Hub project and the future of leisure facilities in Mildenhall,” said Mr Smyth.

The Forest Heath cabinet will be asked to authorise the preparation of the new five -year agreement for the Dome Leisure Centre between MCA, SCC and FHDC at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
