New bishop of Ely installed

ELY'S new bishop is the Rt Rev Stephen Conway.

Currently the Suffragan Bishop of Ramsbury in the diocese of Salisbury, Bishop Conway, who is 52, will be Ely's 69th bishop and will be officially installed early next year on a date yet to be fixed.

He succeeds Bishop Anthony Russell who retired in February this year.

"I am thrilled at the prospect of serving as Bishop of Ely," he said.

"It is a joyful prospect to serve among all God's people in the region, to discover together what God is doing and to join in."

Consecreted in 2006, Bishop Conway was in his new diocese on Monday and Tuesday when he was introduced to the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Hugh Duberly, and other civic dignitaries, the Dean and Chapter of Ely Cathedral and other senior clergy, and members of the Diocesan Office staff.

He also met parishioners at Hampton Vale, a local farmer in Ramsey, and members of the University of Cambridge, before attending evensong at the cathedral.
