An artificial cricket pitch will be laid at Newmarket’s sports pavilion to allow for a local club to join the Last Man Stands league.

Newmarket Town Council agreed to a proposal from the Cambridge Cricket Association to install the pitch at The Severals, off Bury Road, and to help maintain the facility.

Town clerk Isabelle Barratt said the association would cover the costs of installing the pitch and have priority over its use for matches.

The town council would then help to maintain the facility by rolling and mowing the pitch.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Cllr George Lambton said the Last Man Stands league would bring new people into Newmarket to play cricket.

“We are short of resources and man power at the moment,” he said.

“It’s an asset that needs to be maintained. It just needs a little TLC in March and April to prepare it for the summer.”

Cllr Mick Jefferys said: “We put in a first class pitch there and we don’t want to lose that pitch through lack of care.”
