National role for town school

A Newmarket primary school has been selected for an important new role aimed at raising education standards.

Ditton Lodge Primary School along with Bottisham Village College and Swaffham Bulbeck Primary School are three of just 150 schools in England to be granted teaching school status in the third wave announced last week.

The designation by the National College for School Leadership entitles the school to lead the training and professional development for staff.

Staff from the successful schools will now attend a formal induction at the National College’s learning and conference centre in Nottingham.

In a joint statement, Ditton Lodge Primary headteacher Angela Finn, Bottisham Village College principal Kate Evans and Swaffham Bulbeck Primary headteacher Donna Cornwell said: “We are all very excited at this news. There are already very well established partnerships between the schools in our area.

“The Anglian Gateway Teaching School Alliance gives us the opportunity to build on these firm foundations and enable all partners to work together, in a truly collaborative manner, with the simple aim of developing outstanding learning experiences and outcomes for all of the children and young people in our care.”

Maggie Farrar, executive director at the National College, said: “Teaching schools should be proud of their achievement as they need to be at the top of their game to take on this role - outstanding in their own performance and have a track record of raising standards through school-to-school support.

“With some 350 teaching schools around the country we are now well on our way to creating a self-improving school-led education system.

“These are the schools that are blazing the trail by harnessing the finest teaching talent in the profession to drive school improvement in innovative ways, and bring real benefits to pupils and staff.”
