More than 300 mourners packed Newmarket’s Roman Catholic Church on Friday for the funeral mass for Michael ‘Mick’ Poole, who died suddenly at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds on September 22. He was 68.
Born in Ireland, Mr Poole had made Newmarket his home since 1964 and was one of the town’s characters.
A civil engineer by trade, he had played rugby for Newmarket, and in 1968 was a west Suffolk boxing champion. He also sang with a band.
His coffin was carried in a horse-drawn hearse with the horses’ plumes the colours of the Irish tricolour.
Mr Poole leaves three sons Tony, Michael and Fred, two daughters Clair and Amanda, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
