Mixed feelings on car sales business

Residents and councillors were left disappointed when plans for a new car and caravan dealership in Lakenheath were given the green light.

Forest Heath District Council approved a planning application put forward by businessman Brian Rutterford to develop land to the back of 154 High Street into a car and caravan dealers.

It also approved a separate planning application to create a new driveway linking the site to the High Street.

A petition against the plan was signed by 79 people and 15 wrote letters to object.

Ian Smith, of Lakenheath Parish Council, said: “It’s one of the first things you are going to see and it’s not very attractive.

“It’s not about whether we develop the land, it’s whether the use of the land is appropriate.”

But Mr Rutterford said the plans would “revitalise” the village and “bring in some interest rather than see it become a ghost town”.

A report by FHDC said the plan was “not considered to have an adverse effect on the character and appearance of the area, residential amenity or highway safety”.
