Mildenhall ‘was dullest town around’

A MILDENHALL Parish councillor sparked outrage among his colleagues after describing the town’s Christmas lighting as dull.

Cllr Adrian Peachey made the comments during Thursday’s Mildenhall Parish Council meeting following a discussion regarding putting up of festive motifs in the town.

The outburst was the second time within the space of the last three years that Cllr Peachey had slammed the town’s festive display.

“I appreciate the efforts the staff have done but Mildenhall quite frankly is the dullest town around here at Christmas. It is like a ghost town,” said Cllr Peachey.

“I drive through Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Brandon and Littleport and they are all lit up.

“Let’s brighten Mildenhall up to get people into the town at Christmas time.

“We’ve got the money to do this so let’s spend this cash and brighten Mildenhall up at Christmas.”

Last year saw the town move away from a late night shopping event, opting instead to hold a more traditional festive evening which featured carol singers and the switching on of the Christmas tree lights.

“These sort of comments do not help with the progress we have been trying to make,” said Cllr John Barker.

“Although the weather was poor a lot of people that I have spoken to said that last year’s event was a very good effort. Little by little we are moving forward.”

Cllr David Bowman added: “It may not be the best lit up town in the area but over the last three or four years there has been an awful lot of work going into making it better.”

Following the discussion councillors voted in favour of a budget for Christmas lighting to be discussed at the next establishment and policy committee meeting.
