Memorial race honour for popular town stable girl
Former Newmarket stable girl Jayne Reid was remembered by the racing world at the weekend after having a race run in her memory.
On Saturday the town’s Rowley Mile racecourse brought the curtain down on the 2012 Flat season with the Jayne Reid Smiles On Memorial Handicap.
Jayne, whose last job in racing was with town trainer James Fanshawe , died back in September aged just 27 after a year long battle with a rare form of ovarian cancer.
Organising the race was her close friend Jennie Durrans.
“Jayne was very enthusiastic about everything and was full of life,” said Jennie.
“She loved racing and adored working with horses. Staging the race in Jayne’s memory was a really fitting tribute.
“Thanks go out to Newmarket Racecourses for allowing us to stage the race.”
Born in Northern Ireland, Jayne spent most of her younger life in Cyprus, before moving to Newmarket in 2004 to train at the British Racing School. From there she went on to work for trainers Nick Littmoden and Ed Vaughan.
After spending a year working for trainers in Australia, Jayne then moved back to Britain where she linked up with Mr Fanshawe in 2010 where she worked until she died.
“It was a really nice idea of her friends and Newmarket Racecourses to put on the race in memory of Jayne,” said Mr Fanshawe.
“She was a lovely girl who tragically died so young. Jayne was a very good rider and enjoyed working with the more difficult horses as she saw that as a real challenge.
“She really has been missed by us all at the yard.”
Although a host of runners representing yards across the town lined up for the seven-furlong handicap, the £5,175 first prize went the way of Sam Nobulist, trained in Yorkshire by Richard Whitaker.
At the end of last week St Nicholas Hospice Care, where Jayne spent the final few weeks of her life, announced it will be sponsoring a race evening at the Rowley Mile in 2013.
For the fourth consecutive season the Bury St Edmunds-based charity will sponsor the racecourse’s Thursday evening meeting on May 16.
“We are very happy that St Nicholas Hospice Care will once again be supporting us,” said Amy Starkey, Newmarket Racecourse managing director.
“We recognise and admire the fantastic and inspiring work they carry out .”
Also welcoming the announcement was Richard Lindsey, who is part of the hospice’s special events committee.
“The race evening is an important event in the hospice calendar as it helps us raise much-needed funds,” he said.
