Laureate pupils go the extra mile
YOUNG readers of the Journal have written letters to tell us about their walk from London to New York.
Eight colourful letters from pupils at Laureate Primary School told about the students' challenge to walk the equivalent distance from the English capital city to the Big Apple, as part of a Golden Mile Challenge.
The challenge started after Easter and had to be completed by the summer holidays, with children walking or jogging around their school field.
Each Friday, headteacher Olive Millington gave out a trophy to the class which had walked the most miles.
One pupil from Laureate, Hanna Taylor, told the Journal in her letter: "We have achieved a lot and we are all very happy.
"The age groups that are doing it are from four to nine.
"Our four year olds have amazingly done over 500 miles all together."
Every time the children completed a mile they received a band.
Pupils have also learned that it takes eight laps of their 200-metre school field to walk the mile.
Another pupil Jade Jones, wrote: "Because we made it, Waitrose kindly donated some bagels and some Tropicana and school cook Mrs Clayton gave us a special dinner."
