KFC manager arrested in Mildenhall

A MANAGER of a fast food restaurant in Mildenhall has been arrested following a raid carried out by immigration officials.

Acting on intelligence, officers from the UK Border Agency arrested two men following a visit to the Market Place branch of KFC on Tuesday, August 10.

The manager, a 40-year-old Pakistani national, was arrested along with a 28-year-old Pakistani man, both of whom were not entitled to work in the UK.

Following a search of the manager's house, officials found a counterfeit National Insurance Card and a fake Italian passport.

Both men will now remain in detention while the UK Border Agency takes steps to return them to Pakistan.

Unless bosses can prove that they carried out the correct right-to-work checks on their employees, the franchise, which was issued with an on the spot warning, could be hit with a 20,000 fine for employing the men.

Rebecca Newell, spokeswoman for the UK Border Agency's Suffolk and North East Essex local Immigration Team, said: "Illegal working is unfair on honest employers who recruit staff with the right to work in the UK and who pay them a proper salary.

"We are happy to work with businesses to ensure the right pre-employment checks are carried out. But bosses that don't play by the rules face on-the-spot fines and could potentially end up in jail.

"There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks."

A spokeswoman for KFC said: "We never knowingly employ anybody who does not have the correct documentation. We have strict hiring practises and carry out stringent checks whenever a new employee starts at any of our restaurants.

"One employee is being questioned by the UK Borders Agency and we are waiting to hear an update."

Last year UK Border Agency officers deported four Malaysian men after carrying out a similar raid at a Chinese takeaway in Old Station Road, Newmarket.

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business in Suffolk can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk.
