Kevin to swap his spaniels for huskies for Arctic trek

Cartographer, Kevin Pallant, is hoping his map reading skills won’t let him down when he travels to the Arctic circle next month to take part in a charity dog sled challenge.

Kevin, who is also secretary at Chippenham’s Coach House Stables, is heading for Kiruna in Sweden, 145 kilometres north of the Arctic circle, from where he hopes to complete a 200-kilometre expedition through the wild, mountainous expanses of northern Sweden.

“Travelling over frozen lakes, through snow-covered forests and into the mountains, with temperatures varying from minus five centigrade to minus 45 centigrade, will be a far cry from the humble fens,” said Kevin, who has been training for his venture by running and swimming.

Before he and his fellow travellers set off on their expedition they will have to learn how to harness and drive a team of huskies.

Kevin will be raising funds for The Brooke, an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules in the poorest parts of the world. And when he returns he will be hosting an evening at Chippenham village hall on Friday, March 8, when he will share pictures and stories from the trip.

To sponsor Kevin go to www.justgiving.com/Kevin-Pallant, or contact him on 07711 402080 or at Coach House Stables.
