July start for Palace House restoration

Councillors are tonight set to confirm their full backing for a project which will see work to turn Newmarket’s Palace House Stables into a major visitor attraction finally get under way this summer.

The cost of the scheme is £14.3 million, of which £13.7 million has already been raised, and with Forest Heath Council’s final agreement the tendering process for the main construction is expected to start before the end of this month, with work set to start on site in July.

The project will see the historic stables, empty since 1985, transformed into a new home for the town’s National Horseracing Museum with a gallery in Palace House Mansion established for nationally important works of art from the collections of the British Sporting Art Trust.

The site’s historic Rothschild Yard will be restored as a home for the Retraining of Racehorses charity, allowing the site to show live horses as part of its visitor experience.
