Judge praises defendant

A man who attacked a friend in a row over money has been praised by a judge for his efforts to keep out of trouble.

Andrew McIntosh, 44, of Gadwall Way, Soham, struck his victim with a ratchet, causing a small cut to the back of his head which required hospital treatment. He pleaded guilty to an offence of common assault.

Prosecuting at Ipswich Crown Court, Sarah Lewis said the incident took place in the kitchen of an address in Newmarket’s St Mary’s Square in July when McIntosh and the victim argued about money owed from the purchase of a vehicle.

Mitigating, Charles Myatt said despite having a string of previous convictions, none within the past two years, McIntosh was now trying to live a trouble-free life.

Imposing a community order with nine months’ supervision, Judge Rupert Overbury told McIntosh: “I accept that you are now trying to live a quiet life and you’re doing your best not to get into anyone’s way or cause any problems. You are certainly a changed man from the one you were 10 or 15 years ago.”

He said the sentence was designed to help McIntosh continue with the positive changes he had made to his life.
