Journal, June 13, 1914

On Friday morning of last week a Soham lad named Fred Green sustained very serious injuries. The lad, who is 13 years of age is employed by Mr W T Wells , grocer of High Street, and on coming to work on Friday was told to sweep the pavement in front of the shop.

Af ter a time he was missed. Mr Arthur Wells searched the yard and discovered the lad lying insensible on the concrete floor of the stable.

|He was at once taken into the house and Dr Willis was sent for. It appears that the boy got up into the loft of a building at the back of Mr Wells’ shop, and in order to try and reach a bird’s nest, stood on a hamper and lifted himself on to the beam above.

Losing his balance he fell through a trap door opening on to the floor below, a distance of about 14 feet, where he was found by Mr Wells.

The lad was conveyed to his home unconscious. He is still under the care of Dr Willis and lies in a very serious condition, suffering from a fracture of the skull.
