Inquest opens into drowning death in Thailand
AN inquest has been opened into a man who drowned while holidaying in Thailand.
Patrick Molloy, 28, who had lived in St Mary’s Square in Newmarket died in the tourist resort of Pattaya on Sunday December 6.
At the opening of the inquest at Wisbech on Tuesday, December 18, cause of death was given as respiratory failure and drowning. A full hearing will be held at a date yet to be fixed and pending further enquiries.
Mr Malloy’s body had been recovered from the Gulf of Thailand after, according to local reports, he and two of his friends had jumped into the sea to escape a group of Thai men armed with sticks and knives after an incident in a nearby hotel discotheque.
Mr Malloy, who couldn’t swim, had failed to make it to a nearby inflatable banana boat and went under.
Convicted for assault outside a Newmarket bar Mr Malloy was jailed for 18 weeks in July by magistrates in Bury St Edmunds.
