IN COURT: Stablelad,37, hit doorman in the face

A NEWMARKET stablelad who punched a doorman in the face has been fined £300.

James Cronin, 37, of Exeter Road, pleaded guilty to assault after appearing at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Kevin Lowson, prosecuting, told the court that on February 20, Cronin and his partner, Kelly Davies, had been at the town's Unique bar drinking to celebrate her birthday.

The pair were seen by doorman Paul Walker having an argument which became violent.

The court heard that Mr Walker tried to pull the pair apart before Cronin punched him in the nose.

After managing to get Cronin outside, the pair ended up on the floor before Cronin was arrested.

Mr Walker received a scratch to his head, while Cronin suffered bruising and a chipped tooth.

When interviewed, Cronin said he could not remember assaulting Mr Walker.

Mark Thompson, mitigating, said Cronin's recollections of the incident were hazy but he remembered pushing Mr Walker back but not throwing a punch. He claimed door staff were heavy-handed.

Magistrates also ordered Cronin to pay 100 compensation to Mr Walker, 85 towards court costs and a 15 victim surcharge.

At an earlier hearing, Cronin's partner Kelly Davies, 26, was given a 12-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to assault.

She admitted throwing a bottle at a police officer.

After being led away by special constable Lisa Hurley, the court heard that Davies turned to throw a bottle at her as she went to assist her colleague in arresting Cronin.

The bottle hit Miss Hurley on the leg before smashing on the floor.

Mark Thompson, mitigating, said: "She is ashamed to be here in court and is now more conscious of the effects of alcohol.

Fortunately for all parties the injuries are only minor."

Magistrates ordered her to pay Miss Hurley 25 in compensation and 85 towards court costs.
