A couple from Lakenheath toasted 70 years of marriage last week – just days before one of them died.

In the close company of daughters Carol Bruce and Janice Ryding and her husband Derek Leader, Ken and Dorothy Wooldridge celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary with afternoon tea at Thetford Garden Centre last Tuesday.

They used to ride around Buckinghamshire and Middlesex, where they lived after marrying at Stanmore Church on August 5, 1944, on a two-person bike.

“They went everywhere on their tandem. They were really a tandem couple,” Janice said.

They met at the glasshouse Whitefriars Glass, where they worked after shy Ken got a friend to tell Dorothy that he liked her.

Sadly Dorothy, who had lived with Alzheimer’s for three years, passed away
at home aged 92 on Saturday.

Janice said: “We had a little get together rather than a big party because it would have confused them.

“At least they still had their anniversary.”

Ken, 92, who has two grandchildren and two great grandchildren with Dorothy, now lives with Janice and Derek in Lakenheath.
