High Street to benefit from £50k windfall

A NEW initiative which saw Newmarket residents choose a project to be backed by a council windfall has singled out regeneration of the High Street.

Five projects were short-listed as possible recipients of £50,000 which Newmarket Town Council had saved by bringing its horticultural contract back in-house, and buying its own equipment, so the saving should be an annual one.

Town clerk Isabelle Barrett came up with the idea of the money being part of a participatory budget scheme with town council taxpayers invited to vote for their favourite project.

Along with the High Street regeneration, other projects nominated included a new water feature for the town’s memorial garden play area, a statue for the town centre and a youth project.

More than 650 residents took part in the vote with the winning scheme receiving 267 ahead of the water feature which got 216.

Newmarket’s High Street regeneration committee, which is made up of councillors, council officials, retailers, local press representatives and residents, is now considering how the money can be spent. Its ideas will be considered by town councillors before going ahead.
