Help us to help Deryn, 13

A family from Mildenhall are hoping to raise £1,000 for a teenage boy suffering from a rare form of cancer by staging a charity event in the town.

Cheryl Feltner and her partner Jason Sharwood will hold a charity function at Mildenhall Social Club on Saturday to try to raise the cash for 13- year-old Deryn Blackwell who last year was diagnosed with Langerhans cell sarcoma after relapsing while recovering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Taking place at the event will be a performance by Mildenhall-based group Kimberley Ann Theatre School (Kats), a disco and a raffle, while various stalls will be selling goods, including wrist bands supporting Deryn’s charity DoEveRYthiNg.

“We have had an absolutely phenomenal response to the event,” said Cheryl.

“So much has been donated, including tickets for Ladies’ Day at Newmarket and a short break at Center Parcs. We are just overwhelmed at how generous people have been.”

The couple decided to take on the challenge for the youngster, who lives near Watton in Norfolk, after Cheryl’s son Dawson, who has been close friends with Deryn since the pair were initially diagnosed with leukaemia in 2010, suffered a relapse in his fight against the condition last year.

Should all go to plan, Deryn will undergo a bone marrow transplant early next month at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

“We have been through this journey before and we know exactly what the family will be going through,” said Cheryl.

“When the social club held a charity event for Dawson it really gave us a boost and we hope this will do the same for Deryn and his family.

“With Deryn being away for up to three months, it will put financial strain on his mum and dad and by holding this event, hopefully, we can take a lot of that pressure away.”

Tickets for the event which starts at 7.30pm, cost £4 per adult with children admitted free. For more information on Deryn’s story visit doeverything.org.uk.
