Have your say on out-of-hours future
Under-fire out-of-hours health service provider Harmoni will face more questions from Newmarket residents when it stages a forum at the town’s Memorial Hall on Thursday between 3pm and 6pm.
The company, the country’s largest GP out-of-hours provider, has been criticised for closing its base at Newmarket Hospital in February last year, leaving residents needing medical advice having to travel to Mildenhall or Bury St Edmunds.
It was also condemned for staging its first ‘consultation’ over the closure at Worlington, an event which was not widely publicised at a venue which was not easily accessible to Newmarket residents.
Local complaints were raised with Suffolk County Council’s health and scrutiny committee last July when Harmoni was instructed by councillors to “engage more with the people in Newmarket”.
Forest Heath District Council’s cabinet member for health, Cllr Warwick Hirst, said: “We remain committed to getting an out-of-hours service back in Newmarket.”
Harmoni spokeswoman Zoe Pursglove, said: “It is important people understand how the GP out-of-hours service works. Our staff will be on hand to answer questions and will welcome feedback on the service.”
