Proposals for around 400 new homes on part of Lord Derby’s Hatchfield Farm in Newmarket’s Fordham Road have been submitted to planners.
The plan, a scaled down version of an original application for 1500 new homes, which was thrown out by Forest Heath District councillors whose decision was upheld on appeal, could be considered by members of the authority’s development control committee before the end of the year.
Lord Derby said his development would bring not only much needed homes but also sports pitches, open spaces, improved pedestrian, cycle and horse crossings.
On Tuesday the council’s cabinet will hear there are more than 1,000 homes currently standing empty across the district. Figures released recently show 3.68 per cent of Forest Heath’s housing stock is currently vacant with 374 homes having been empty for more than six months.
