Harbinger heads to Stud in Japan

THE POWER of the yen has prevailed in the bidding battle to secure the stud services of one of the best racehorses to be trained in Newmarket in recent years.

Harbinger, runaway winner of the the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, and trained by Sir Michael Stoute has been sold to stand at stud in Japan in a multi million pound deal.

Last month it was confirmed that the four-year-old son of Dansili, currently recovering from a fractured left foreleg he sustained during a routine training gallop would not be risked on a racecourse again.

The injury he sustained was a crack at the base of the long bone above the ankle and has been repaired with screws by veterinary surgeons at Rossdales Equine Hospital in Exning and the prognosis is good.

"Harbinger is recovering well and is a model patient. He should be sound enough to travel within a few months.

"The required tests for export are ongoing but at an advanced stage, " said John Warren, director of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, the colt's owners .

Warren who handled the sale negotiations, said "There were a number of top stud farms from both home and abroad involved in the negotiations and there was a very strong bid to keep the horse in England.

"Unfortunately for the British bloodstock industry the final bid from the famous Shadai Group, where Sunday Silence stood, was far too strong to be able to compete. "
