HAITI EARTHQUAKE IN PICTURES: Townspeople rally to provide aid
PEOPLE across Newmarket and Mildenhall have responded to cries for help from Haiti after a series of earthquakes killed more than 140,000 people.
Children and teachers at Fairstead House in Newmarket have been doing their bit by organising a collection, with donations from parents bolstering the fund.
"We are very pleased with the response from the parents and the children," said headteacher Gareth Williams.
"We had a letter from one of our pupils, whose father lives in the Caribbean, and decided to support the Save The Children Haiti Emergency Appeal.
"We held an assembly at the school to tell the children about the earthquake – it was very moving and one child even donated her tooth fairy money."
So far, the school has raised more than 800.
At Kettlefields School, Dullingham, youngsters took part in a hats for Haiti appeal that saw them donate money to wear special headgear for the day, raising 220 in the process.
St Felix Middle School's fundraising topped 680, with pupils and staff organising a non-uniform day on Friday as part of a bid to raise much-needed cash.
Meanwhile, Jessica Adams is planning a charity massage at Newmarket Leisure Centre on Saturday and Sunday, February 6 and 7, from 10am to 4pm.
Jessica, who runs her own company, Simply Natural Touch in Bury St Edmunds, has recently expanded into Newmarket. Anyone who would like a massage should contact her on 07876 342007 or visit her website at www.simplynaturaltouch.co.uk.
Staff at the leisure centre have also stepped in to help raise money and will hold a three-hour back-to-back fitness session with classes in spinning, boxercise and body pump on Saturday, February 6.
The session will start at 10am and is priced at 10 for the three classes, with money raised going to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
"The people of Haiti need our energy and support so we want to show that we're fit and fighting for them," said Jo Gathercole, centre health and fitness manager.

Newmarket Open Door is holding a bric-a-brac sale of books, clothing and household goods at the former Marshall Ford car showroom on the Blenheim Industrial Park in Dettingen Way, Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 3pm.
Meanwhile, Mildenhall Rotary Club has sent water purification tablets and tents to those in need.
The move is part of a global rotarian effort to help those in need, with some of the boxes having
already arrived in Port au Prince after being flown from Miami, Florida.
Rotarians have joined forces with Shelterbox, an organisation working in Haiti to distribute and receive the aid boxes.
