Proposals to transfer the fitness gym at The Dome Leisure Centre in Mildenhall to another location in the town have been submitted to the district council.

A planning application was submitted by Anglia Community Leisure (ACL) to Forest Heath District Council (FHDC) earlier this week to re-locate the gym at the Bury Road sports centre to a vacant wing at the district council offices in College Heath Road.

Under the proposals put forward by ACL, who manage the leisure centre on behalf of FHDC, it would see a new purpose built dance studio built, along with a larger gym and brand new changing rooms.

The plan is seen as the first step to creating the Mildenhall Hub- a partnership project which is aimed at bringing a range of public services in the town on to one site.

“For The Dome this is a stepping stone towards assisting their partners with their long term plans to move facilities to the Mildenhall Hub,” said Nigel Snape, manager of the Dome.

“It will mean a larger gym, more equipment and at a site which has increased car parking spaces, helping us to accommodate increasing demand for health and facilities in the town.

“The gym would in a more central location, next to the library and health centre, and allow greater access for our members to the gym which is restricted at times at The Dome due to the centre sharing facilities with Mildenhall College Academy.”

The planned move, which at the moment would be a temporary one until a site for the new Mildenhall Hub has been decided, has received praise from James Waters, leader of FHDC.

“These changes are part of our larger vision to create a hub of public services- an idea that we hope will snowball, allowing us to improve services for our community, while keeping the costs to taxpayers down,” said Cllr Waters.

“It’s a brilliant innovative scheme that is taking place here in Mildenhall, and I am sure other towns outside of West Suffolk will be watching with envy and looking to follow our example.”

It is expected that the move would take place in October should the plan go-ahead.
