The spirit of the 1970s was captured in Newmarket on Saturday as The Guineas Shopping Centre celebrated its 40th anniversary in style.
Staff got into the party mood by dressing up in ‘70s clothing and shops donated their goods and offered their services. A DJ from Unique Bar played old hits.
Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe and Poundland filled party bags and Fish Burwell gave cooking demonstrations and prawn and crab salad bowl tasters. Cardfactory filled balloons with helium, M&S gave a birthday cake, The Bushel Inn ran a barbecue while the Newmarket Retailers’ Association loaned four Victorian barrows for displays.
A quiz to find the brain of Newmarket was won by Claire Lehner, of Costa Coffee, who received a chocolate making voucher for Artistry and Cocoa, in Sun Lane, for her expert local knowledge.
The event, organised by centre administrator Nicky Cooper, raised money for Sunflowers Care, a charity which cares for sick children and teenagers aged up to 18. Centre manager, Ross McKittrick, said: “It proved highly successful, not only by how many happy customers there were, but by increasing footfall year-on-year by 7%.”
