Golfers in Newmarket have raised thousands of pounds for three local charities.

The Links Golf Club raised £8,595, which has been split between St Nicholas Hospice Care, the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and Newmarket Day Centre.

The charities were chosen by the 2012 captains, Pat Wallace and Bryan Short.

Most of the money was raised at the club’s annual charity day, held in June, as well as during various fundraisers organised throughout the year.

Cheques were presented to Sue Long, community fundraiser for St Nicholas Hospice Care, Maire Collins, of the Cambridge branch of the MND Association, and Elvis McMinn, manager of Newmarket Day Centre, during a special lunch at the club house, in Cambridge Road last month.

Mr Short said: “Pat and I would like to thank all of our club members and the staff here who have supported us throughout the year and for their outstanding generosity and enthusiasm.”
