Olympian Goldie Sayers was at Newmarket Day Centre on Monday to draw its Christmas raffle winners.

Javelin thrower Goldie said she was delighted to be back in her home town and especially pleased to be invited to be involved with the day centre’s fundraising as her mother, former Journal editor Liz, was a member of the steering committee which worked to set up the day centre before Goldie was born over 30 years ago.

“The only certainty in life is growing older and so many people, especially those with no family or friends nearby, face a lonely old age,” said Goldie. “I know from my visit on Monday that the day centre is helping so many people enjoy a happier and healthier life.

It’s a tremendous asset to the town and deserves our support in all its future fundraising efforts in 2013.”
