Newmarket couple Elgar and Sue Gray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday with a quiet day in.
The couple met in The Bull pub in the High Street and married on September 21, 1963, at Ashley parish church when Elgar was 24 and Sue was 21.
Sue, now 71, moved to Newmarket from Glamorgan, Wales, when she was 18, to work in the town’s racing industry while Elgar was brought up in Newmarket in Duchess Drive, the road where the couple have lived for the past 20 years.
Their early marital home was a caravan as they worked as fruit pickers in Wisbech. They later moved to Mildenhall and Elgar worked at a scrap yard in Fordham. The key to their happiness they said was “just getting on.”
“We have our rows, but we’re happy,” Sue said. “Nobody can give advice really, except for just taking each day as it comes.”
The couple have three daughters, Amanda, 49, Helen, 45 and Emma, 43, and eight grandchildren.
