Go-ahead for care home plan

Plans to build a new 60-bed state-of-the-art care home and well-being centre in Mildenhall have been approved by district planning officers.

The new home, fronted by Care UK, was given the go-ahead by Forest Heath District Council last week, four months after the initial proposals were submitted.

The centre, which is one of 10 to be built county-wide as part of a new £60million investment programme, will be built on the former site of Great Heath Primary School in St John’s Close, which has been vacant since October.

It will replace the town’s former county-run care centre in Wamil Court – one of 16 existing homes transferred over to Care UK in December.

“The plans for the new care home in Mildenhall are part of the vision we developed with Care UK for the future of residential care in the county,” said Cllr Colin Noble, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for health and adult care.

“Care UK has a proven track record of delivering high quality care in state-of-the-art facilities and this is what I want for people in Mildenhall.”

Residents will get en-suite facilities in every room and the new home will also feature a garden area, cafe, hairdresser’s and a small cinema, while the well-being centre will provide day-care activities and clubs for older residents in the town.

“We are very pleased to get the go-ahead, especially because in addition to a new care home this development will provide a well-being day care centre, which will be a new service for this community,” said Chris Hopkinson, regional operations director at Care UK.

“This will also be an invaluable resource for family carers who will be able to enjoy a few hours to themselves knowing their loved one is in a safe and caring place.”

Work on the new home, which is to be carried out by Castleoak, is expected to begin in May with a scheduled open date being planned for May 2014.
