Games area gets £50,000 lottery cash injection

WORK is set to begin on a new multi- activity games area in Mildenhall thanks to a £50,000 Lottery grant.

The five-figure cash injection from the Big Lottery Fund was secured at the end of last month by the Mildenhall Community Partnership, which is overseeing the project.

There was further cause for celebration for the group just days later after they received news that Forest Heath District Council had handed them an additional 10,000 on top of the 15,000 already given over for the scheme.

"We are over the moon with receiving the grant as it was our fourth attempt at applying for it along with the additional money from Forest Heath," said David Bowman, chairman of the Partnership.

"The plan now is to get the tender sorted out for the project and hopefully work will begin on it in early October."

In May the group received the green light from Forest Heath District Council to create the new area on an existing netball court on the town's Jubilee Fields.

The project will see a new floodlit court suitable for football, netball and basketball, enclosed by wire mesh fence created, along with the installation on land nearby of several pieces of outdoor gym equipment, including a leg press and ski walker.

It is hoped that the project will be complete by March.
