Four young women from the Newmarket area have taken to the water as part of a national swim challenge with their progress being monitored by an Olympic gold medallist.
Olivia Horncastle and Millie Guest both 14 and from Kirtling, together with Charlie Avison, 25, of Mouton Avenue, Kentford, and Lauren Horncastle, 23, from Cheveley Park, Newmarket, have been training at the Newmarket Leisure Centre pool as part of the British Gas Swimming Challenge, a series of 4000m relays taking place around the country next month.
The girls, who will be swimming at the London Fields Lido on September 29, are swimming for Lumie, a Cambridge-based light therapy company and are tracking their progress on social network sites where Rebecca Addlington advised them to train ‘little and often’ rather than exhausting themselves in the pool just once a week.
The race is not for charity but aims to encourage families and friends to swim. Any team entering gets four free one to one coaching sessions with an expert at their local pool. Go to the SwimBritain website for more information.
