Former Newmarket College assistant principal Michael Jefferys has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for the West Suffolk seat in the next General Election.
The Newmarket town and district councillor, who is also a member of the Bill Tutte working group, has fought the seat on three previous occasions and in 1997 came within 1867 votes of beating the then Conservative candidate Richard Spring.
“It is a privilege and an honour to be chosen as Labour’s candidate,” said Mr Jeffery. “Our society is more unequal now than at any time since before the Second World War, indeed the UK could face Victorian levels of inequality within five to 10 years. Yet all the evidence suggests that more equal societies are healthier societies. That is what we must fight for – it is a very simple idea”.
