Festival committee hands out cash

Thousands of pounds have been donated to local charities by the Newmarket July Festival Committee.

The presentation of the proceeds of last summer’s week- long programme of activities, organised to coincide with the town’s world-famous July racing festival, took place at the Bedford Lodge hotel on Thursday.

Cheques for £1,000 were presented to Newmarket’s New Astley Club for stable and stud staff and to the Voluntary Network based in All Saints Road. There were also donations of £500 to Newmarket Day Centre, the Gateway Club, Stepping Stones Nursery and Little Buds Nursery.

Further funds from the festival will be distributed throughout the year and plans for this year’s event include a special cycling event and a QIPCO Guineas preview lunch at the Rowley Mile Racecourse.
