Fans backing motor sport at Mildenhall

MORE than 3,000 people have joined a campaign to help keep motorsport at Mildenhall Stadium.

Motor racing fans from across the country have come out in force on social networking site Facebook following a public appeal by stadium owners RDC Promotions.

The move comes in the light of the company's pending court case later this year against a nearby resident over noise levels at the venue.

"We spent 40,000 on a new sound-proofing barrier and have complied with all the sound tests that the council have carried out," said Dave Coventry of RDC Promotions.

"If we lose the court case it would have considerable impact on the future of the stadium. At the stock car meetings we have had an unbelievable response to a campaign we have been running."

Also facing the threat of closure is the neighbouring moto-cross, whose owners are also set to appear in court following a similar complaint by the same person.

At Thursday's Mildenhall Parish Council meeting councillors voted unanimously in favour of backing owners Motoland UK with a letter of support.

In an attempt to reduce noise at the circuit, around 100,000 has been spent on straw bales and earth bunding to reduce the noise impact.

Clifford Bastick, director of Motoland UK, said: "Every resident has been supportive and we have had lots of letters supporting us.

If we do lose the case then it could well see us closing down. The council are happy with everything as the noise has been reduced by five or six decibels."

David Bowman, Mildenhall parish councillor, speaking outside of Thursday's meeting said: "It is very useful for the local economy and provides several jobs and would be a travesty if it shuts.

"It brings money to the area and gives youngsters the chance to learn how to ride motorbikes, along with meeting new friends from outside the area.

"I find it incredible that this complaint has been made when there are signs clearly indicating a motorsport venue is located nearby."
