Former Newmarket Town footballer Adam Burns, who next year plans to walk 1,966km to the World Cup finals in Brazil, has received a good luck message from his footballing hero.

Adam, 27, who currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia, and his two friends, David Bewick and Pete Johnson, will set off from Argentina on March 1 and walk for approximately 100 days through Argentina, Uruguay and finally Brazil in time for the start of the tournament on June 12.

When Newcastle legend and former England star Alan Shearer heard about their effort, with which they hope to raise $20,000 for the charitable J de V Arts Care Trust, he sent a special message.

“I want to wish you very good luck on your walk. It’s a fantastic thing you’re doing for a great cause so all the best and well done for doing it,” he said.

“Growing up, I always had Shearer’s name on the back of my Newcastle shirt, so to get a good luck message from him is amazing,” said Adam. For more information about the walk, email walktotheworldcup@gmail.com
