Dying addict jailed for robbing OAP

A TERMINALLY ill heroin addict who robbed a pensioner to buy drugs for his pregnant girlfriend has been jailed.

Paul Miller had grabbed a handbag from his 71-year-old victim in an alleyway near The Guineas car park in Newmarket.

As Patricia Watson struggled to hang on to her bag she was pulled to the ground, suffering a bruised hip and grazing to her back, Ipswich Crown Court heard on Monday.

Miller, 40, of Armstrong Close, Newmarket, who had just collected his regular prescription for the heroin substitute methadone five days before Christmas, got away with £50.

Prosecutor Michael Crimp said Mrs Watson had been dropped off in a nearby service bay by her husband and was walking along an alleyway when Miller barged into her, leaving her bruised and shaken.

Mitigating, Paul Booty said Miller, who admitted robbery, was living on disability benefits because he was unable to work as he was suffering from an incurable cancer which had led to three quarters of his intestine having to be removed.

He said Miller had acted on impulse when he saw Mrs Watson and deeply regretted what he had done. He was sentenced to 32 months’ imprisonment.
