'Dragons' Den' bid to fill Newmarket's shops
NEWMARKET'S recently formed retailers' association is looking at ways attracting new businesses to fill the town's empty shops.
Members are working on a competition along the lines of the television show Dragons' Den and are hoping that it could attract support from a television company.
There are currently around 20 empty shops in the town and the association is keen to see them occupied.
The winners of the contest would be offered rent-free use of a shop until the business is established.
At its meeting last month members of the association agreed that the initial target should be the owner of the empty units in the Guineas shopping centre. They are also looking for sponsors for the project.
At the forefront of the initiative are Julie Eden who runs Coffee and Co in Palace Street and Richard Goss who runs Venus Hair and Beauty in Rous Road.
The competition is the second phase of a scheme to bring empty town shops back into use.
The first phase involves getting displays in some of the empty shop windows, possibly of local history and art.
The displays would also highlight contacts such as Business Link which can give advice to anyone thinking of starting up a new business venture.
An update on the scheme was due to be given at last night's meeting of the Newmarket Retailers' Association when members were also due to hear Chris Garibaldi, the recently appointed director of Newmarket's National Horseracing Museum, give a presentation on the Home of Horseracing Trust's project to turn the currently derelict Palace House Stables in a world-renowned tourist attraction which could bring an additional 44,000 visitors and 2 million a year to Newmarket
